FAQs on 5G Training, 5G Technology, and QWA

General 5G and Wireless Communication Information:

What is 5G?
5G is the 5th generation mobile network. It enables a new kind of network that is designed to intelligently connect everyone and everything together, including machines, objects, and devices. Check out Qualcomm’s “What is 5G?” page to learn more about the 5G revolution.

How fast is 5G?
5G gives us the fastest wireless speeds we have ever experienced, with speeds up to 10x faster than 4G. 5G allows us to browse the web faster than ever before and even stream 8K video. It can also handle 100x as much traffic as 4G. To learn more about the speed and capabilities of 5G, check out Qualcomm’s 5G Academy.

How does 5G Work?
This is not a question we can answer in just a couple sentences. 5G is possible because of technological advancements in network architecture like massive-MIMO and 3D beamforming, broadband capabilities across many new frequency bands of operation, and so much more. To learn more about how 5G works and how it fits into the cellular communication landscape, we recommend taking our “Fundamentals of Cellular Communication and 5G” course.

What frequency is 5G?
5G operates in multiple frequency bands primarily across two frequency ranges: bands below 7GHz, called “sub-7” and referred to as FR1; and bands between 24GHz and 52GHz, like 28 and 39 GHz, called FR2 or “millimeter wave” (“mmWave” for short). The bands 5G uses in your region largely depends on the type of spectrum that was made available to 5G by your local authorities (e.g. FCC). We discuss 5G frequency at length in Chapter 3 of our 5G NR Technical Training course, so check out that course to learn more!

What is the difference between 4G and 5G?
While there are many differences between 4G and 5G, one of the main differences you will notice as a wireless user is the speed of 5G. In fact, 5G has 100x as much capacity as 4G and allows for much faster streaming and an overall better web experience. In particular, 5G introduces massive MIMO and beamforming techniques to improve both spectral efficiency and system capacity. To learn more about some of the specific differences between the two, visit Qualcomm’s 5G Academy. The link in the previous sentence goes directly to the chapter that discusses the differences between each generation of wireless technology.

Information about 5G and Wireless Training:

How does 5G training work?
5G training involves enhancing your 5G and wireless engineering skills. It can involve many different aspects of 5G, such as 5G NR, Industrial IoT, and more. For information about the specific types of 5G training we offer, check out our blog titled, “Receive 5G Training with Qualcomm.”

What does a 5G training course cover?
The following are some of the most popular topics covered in 5G training courses, along with links to each topic taught by the Qualcomm Wireless Academy: How do I know which 5G course to take?
If you’re a wireless engineer, we offer specialized courses that can train you on specific topics, depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re a business professional looking to learn more about 5G and how it can be optimized for business, we recommend taking one of the courses we offer specifically for non-engineers.

How can I receive 5G air interface training?
The Qualcomm Wireless Academy offers 5G air interface training for businesses around the world. We send one of our engineers to your company to deliver premium in-person training, or we can conduct the training virtually if you prefer. You can request a training for your company by visiting our page on 5G air interface training.

What is covered in wireless technology training?
The depth of a wireless technology training course depends on the goal of the course. While some courses offer a broader overview of 5G and wireless communication, others dive deep into a single topic. The Qualcomm Wireless Academy offers a variety of overview courses, as well as dozens of in-depth training seminars that can help you enhance your wireless skills and take your career to the next level. You can view our courses and sort by role and skill level on our home page.

What do I need to do to become a wireless engineer?
Since there are different types of wireless engineers, what you must do depends on what exactly you want to focus on for your career. In general, though, wireless engineers typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a similar quantitative field, while many have a master’s degree or PhD as well. In many cases, one can become a wireless technician, though, by receiving an associate degree in engineering or computer science.

Regardless of whether you’re looking to become a wireless engineer or technician, you can expand your wireless skills by taking specialized courses with wireless technology leaders, such as Qualcomm Technologies. The Qualcomm Wireless Academy offers dozens of courses for wireless engineers and technicians looking to enhance their careers. Check out our home page and view our classes by subject and experience level.

What does a typical wireless engineer do?
Being a “wireless engineer” could involve a variety of different tasks, depending on your focus. Some wireless engineers build the technology that powers 5G; some are responsible for ensuring the stability of internet connections in a given area; some are responsible for fixing connectivity issues; and many perform dozens of other tasks associated with wireless communication.
